"Submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ."
Before Paul addresses husbands and wives specifically, he lays this foundation for all Christian relationship: mutual submission, flowing not from weakness but from reverence for Christ. In marriage this looks like neither spouse demanding their own way as a right, but both continually yielding, deferring, and honoring the other's needs above their own comfort. If your marriage has settled into a pattern of one person always giving ground, revisit this verse together. It's addressed to both of you, equally, out of shared reverence for the same Lord.
Lord, teach my spouse and me mutual submission, out of reverence for You rather than obligation to each other. Amen.
