"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
Notice the order here: submission comes before resistance. Trying to white-knuckle your way past temptation through sheer willpower alone rarely holds for long. But when your will is already aligned under God — submitted, surrendered, dependent — resistance has something to stand on. This is why the fight against temptation is really a fight of nearness to God more than a fight of raw effort. Draw close to Him first today, and let the resisting flow from that closeness rather than from grit alone.
Lord, I submit myself to You first. Give me the strength to resist, trusting that in You the enemy has no lasting foothold. Amen.
