Grief Without Despair

"We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope."
— 1 Thessalonians 4:13

Paul never tells the Thessalonians not to grieve. He tells them not to grieve like people with no hope. That distinction matters more than it first seems. Your tears are not a failure of faith; they are the honest cost of love. But grief held by hope moves differently than grief held alone — it can rest, it can remember with gratitude, it can eventually laugh again without guilt. Let yourself grieve fully today, and let hope stand quietly beside you while you do.

Prayer

Lord, I don't want to rush my grief or pretend it away. Sit with me in it, and let hope keep me from despair. Amen.
