"Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience."
Notice the order Paul uses: identity comes before behavior. He doesn't say 'act compassionate and kind so that you become chosen and beloved.' He says because you already are chosen and beloved, now put on these qualities — they flow from an established identity, not toward an earned one. If your compassion or patience has been running thin lately, it might be worth returning to this order. Rest first in being chosen and beloved before trying to muster the virtues that are meant to grow out of that identity.
Father, thank You for choosing and loving me before I did anything to earn it. Let compassion and kindness grow from that identity today. Amen.
